Get acquainted on January 9 & 10

Before classes begin, plan to get acquainted or re-acquainted with the library at one of our faculty-only orientations to the library. We will begin with an introduction over light refreshments in Perry Library 151. Then reference librarians will lead tours geared to the interests of faculty. Pick whichever time bests fits your schedule: Thursday, January 9, 2:00-3:00PM or Friday, January 10, 9:00-10:00AM. Both faculty and graduate teaching assistants are welcome to attend. For more information, call 683-4185.

Surf 'n' Turf in the library

Offered to Old Dominion University faculty, staff, and students, these brief sessions begin at 12:30 PM.

In Surf sessions on Tuesdays, January 14 and 21, you will learn some basic techniques for searching the library catalog, the Internet and research databases.

In Turf sessions on Thursdays, January 16 and 23, you will see key areas of the library and learn how to use them.

There is no need to register; interested persons should come to the lobby and meet the librarian in front of the poster advertising the session.

Information Resources pages expand

The Library's Information Resources Web pages will soon have a new look, be easier to use, and include more resources. The General Reference section has already expanded to include links to calendars, timelines, legal information, tax forms, along with additional dictionaries, almanacs, and the standard categories of biographical information, style guides, statistical sources and more.

The new Research Databases section of the Information Resources page features a simplified arrangement of databases by broad subject category, as well as an alphabetical title approach and search box.

All of these resources are available from the Library Web page at http://www.lib.odu.edu.

Baskets for Books

Join in the excitement when the Lady Monarchs play the VCU Rams at 7:00 PM on January 24 in the Ted Constant Convocation Center. A portion of the box office proceeds will benefit the Library, so come on out. Information on special group rates is available by calling 683-4146.

Book sale a success

Thanks to everyone who supported the annual book sale, we made a total of $2926 that funded student achievement awards, given to student library
employees who demonstrated a high degree of dedication and accomplishment. The awards were presented at a student appreciation lunch in December.

Worried about perishing?

One way to keep up on what's being published in your field of interest is to sign up for one or more free "alert services." For those who missed our fall workshop on such services, you will find a helpful guide from the library Web page. Just click on Research Assistance; then choose Guide to Alert Services under the heading Other Research Help.

Distance Learning Corner

Where in the world are you? When requesting delivery of library materials, students and faculty at Teletechnet sites should indicate their site location, either in the "other information" or "comments" box, on electronic forms. Unfortunately, the library cannot customize these forms to make them more specific. Be sure to include the name of your site to ensure the fastest possible service.

Try this!

"Today in History," http://lcweb2.loc.gov/ammem/today/ today.html from the Library of Congress, provides multimedia information related to specific days-including photographs, video and audio clips-and text summaries of each day. As one of the American Memory Historical Collections, the site can be searched by topic, month, or specific day. This is one of the intriguing new sites recently linked from the Library Web page under Information Resources.

Bring back the books

This year the library is reinstating the policy of requiring that all "term loan" items be physically brought in for renewal by the end of spring semester. To simplify the renewal process, the library is offering two options:

1. You may bring in items to have them renewed with a new due date of May 11, 2004 or
2. You may request renewal by email to circ1@libstaff.lib.odu.edu. Such email renewals, if received before January 12, 2003, will be given a due date of May 10, 2003, by which time the items must be brought back to the library.

Online renewals through the library Web page will not be available during this endeavor. For further information, please contact Gisele McAdoo at gmcadoo@odu.edu or 683-4166.
