Faculty and GTAs:
What's new for you in the library
Before the semester begins, plan to discover what new services
and resources you might take advantage of, at one of our faculty-only
"What's New For You in the Library" gatherings. The one-hour
sessions will begin with a very brief introduction over light refreshments
in Perry Library 151. Then reference librarians will lead tours
geared to the specific interests of faculty and graduate teaching
assistants.
Pick whichever time best fits your schedule: Thursday, January
8 at 2:00PM or Friday, January 9 at 10:00AM. Reservations, though
not required, are helpful to us in planning. To let us know you
plan to come or for more information, call 683-4185 or email cswaine@odu.edu.

Book sale report
The Perry Library fall book sale netted over $3900, which allowed
for 41 students employed at the Library to receive service achievement
awards. The awards were presented at a student appreciation luncheon
held in December. Thanks go to the Friends of the Library, all who
donated books or time, and all who bought the books.
New library Web page debuts
In early January, the Library's Web presence will have a new look
and be much easier to navigate. We have eliminated one whole level
of "clicks." Now from our homepage, you will be able to
click directly on links for databases, journals, tutorials, distance
learning, course reserves, interlibrary loan, the library calendar,
and more.

Surf 'n' Turf in the library
Offered to Old Dominion University faculty, staff, and students,
these brief sessions begin at 12:30 PM.
In Surf sessions on Tuesdays, January 13 and 20, you will learn
some basic techniques for searching the library catalog, the Internet
and research databases.
In Turf sessions on Thursdays, January 15 and 22, you will see
key areas of the library and learn how to use them.
There is no need to register; interested persons should come to
the lobby and meet the librarian in front of the poster advertising
the session.
Distance Learning Corner
Distance learners are always welcome at the main campus in Norfolk
to use our library Internet stations and get help at the reference
desk. With an ODU ID card and an activated LAN account, you may
also use the campus computer labs on the main campus and facilities
available at the Higher Education Centers: Virginia Beach, Peninsula
(Hampton), Tri-Cities (Portsmouth), and Northern Virginia (Sterling).
To activate your LAN account, complete the form at:
http://www.odu.edu/af/occs/stu_accounts.html.
LexisNexis Academic
Have you tried the new LexisNexis database? From the library homepage,
just click on Databases, then on L. You will find that LexisNexis
contains full-text documents from over 5,900 news, business, legal,
medical, and reference publications, with a variety of flexible
search options. Plan to come to the February 19th workshop to learn
how to take full advantage of this resource.
