ODU theses and dissertations online

A new database called Current Research@ contains dissertations and theses from Old Dominion University. You can search citations and abstracts, view 24-page previews, and download the full text of dissertations and theses published after 1996. If you are not on campus, you'll need to enter your Campus ID (usually your social security number, no spaces or hyphens).

Coming events for faculty

Faculty members wanting an opportunity to learn more about new databases have two opportunities this month. To register for the MLA International Bibliography database workshop on February 5, sign up with Karen Vaughan at kvaughan@odu.edu. To learn more about the new LexisNexis Academic database, register for the February 19 workshop with Paul Showalter at pshowalt@odu.edu. Both events will be held at 10:00 AM in Perry Library 163.

Citation indexes now online

ISI's Web of Science is a citation database for the sciences, social sciences, and even the arts and humanities, as well being a source for subject searching by specific terms. If you have used the paper versions of Science Citation Index or Social Sciences Citation Index, you will surely want to try out the Web of Science. From the library homepage, click on Databases, then on "W." From home, you'll need to enter your Campus ID (usually your social security number, no spaces or hyphens).

Grad students - Saturday workshops

Two Saturday morning research workshops are scheduled for graduate students in March. The March 20 workshop, "Smart Words," will help you search databases using subject headings, descriptors and online thesauri, rather than the usual keyword approach. Register in advance with Renee Davis, rdavis@odu.edu or 683-4484.

On March 27, learn how to use the powerful new databases LexisNexis Academic and Web of Science. Register with Karen Vaughan at kvaughan@odu.edu or 683-4184.

Both workshops will be held in Room 163 of Perry Library, from 9:30 to 11:30 AM. Registration is required.

Black History Month exhibit

In recognition of Black History Month, the library is sponsoring an exhibit, "Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education: Thurgood Marshall, the Man and His Legacy." Marshall, who led NAACP lawyers in their constitutional challenge of racial segregation in public schools, later became the first African-American Supreme Court Justice.

The exhibit is located in the lobby of the Perry Library from February 1 through February 24, 2004. Features include an interactive CD-ROM, photographs, books, and extensive special collections materials related to the desegregation of Norfolk Public Schools. In addition, an exhibit Web page with oral history links is located at: http://www.lib.odu.edu/exhibits /brownvboard.htm.

Tax forms available

Printed federal tax forms and instructions are now available inside the reference room of Perry Library. You can easily find and print both federal and Virginia forms from the library's Web page by clicking on General reference sources and then tax forms.

Distance Learning Corner

The library Web page has a new look. Now you can click on distance learning directly from the homepage. There you will find links to course readings "on reserve," links to forms for requesting books and articles that you need, and the library handbook for distance learners - with lots of good tips on using library services and resources.

Women's History Month exhibit

During March, be sure to visit the lobby of Perry Library to see the Women's History Month exhibit titled, "Progress and Pride: Perry Library Celebrates Women in Business and Industry." For more information, contact Paul Showalter at pshowalt@odu.edu.
