President Runte donates $25,000

At the state of the university address on August 25, President Roseann Runte announced her generous capital campaign donation of $25,000 to the Perry Library this year. Her hope is that everyone in the campus community will also support the library and help us reach the target goal of $1,000,000. Please consider doing so. The library is the heart of the university.

Announcing research workshops for grad students

ODU graduate students are invited to attend Saturday morning research workshops during October in Room 163 of Perry Library.

On October 16, the theme is Becoming Expert at Searching Online Research Databases. Here you will learn advanced search techniques for use with research databases in finding the information you need. The library subscribes to some 200 such databases. Register with Nancy Schafer by email at nschafer@odu.edu or by telephone at 683-5909.

The workshop theme for October 23 is Using Powerful News Resources. The session will focus on LexisNexis Academic, Factiva, Global Newsbank, World News Connection, and newspapers on the Internet. Learn how these resources can help you find the information you need for your research. Bring your own topics and try out some of the techniques and features that will be demonstrated. Register with Paul Showalter by email at pshowalt@odu.edu or by telephone at 683-5908.

Used book sale raised $3802

Our usual fall semester book sale became the back-to-school used book sale and was held September 14 through17. All profits will be used to provide library student employees with awards at the end of the semester.

Plans call for another book sale to be held during spring semester. Look for details to be announced later.

Looking at promotion and tenure?

At many universities, citation searching is used as one means of evaluating the quality of a faculty member's research. Faculty often use this approach in preparing portfolios for promotion and tenure. Plan to attend this important faculty workshop on cited reference searching, led by Karen Vaughan on Tuesday, October 26, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in Perry Library 163. Registration, though not mandatory, is helpful to us in planning. For more information or to register, contact kvaughan@odu.edu.

VIVA's 10th anniversary

VIVA, The Virtual Library of Virginia, had its beginning in July 1994 with funding from the Virginia General Assembly. VIVA's mission is "to provide, in an equitable, cooperative and cost effective manner, enhanced access to library and information resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia's non-profit academic libraries serving the higher education community."

VIVA supports Old Dominion University research needs through greater access to online databases and journals. All VIVA resources are available through the ODU Libraries' Web site.

Incorporating classical music and art images into your classes

Are you teaching a course where music and art images might enhance learning? Did you know that large collections of art images and classical music works are now available to you with a few clicks of your mouse?

Meet in Perry Library Room 163 to see, hear and learn more about these resources from Visual Resources Curator Nancy Shelton and Music Reference Librarian Elizabeth Hogue at 10:00 AM on Thursday, November 11. Registration, though not mandatory, is helpful to us in planning. For more information or to register, contact cswaine@odu.edu.

Another library success story

A major in the French Marines was so happy with the information he got from our Science Reference Librarian, Renee Davis, that U.S.-French relations may have become a bit firmer.

Renee received a telephone call from a librarian at the Combined Arms Research Library, U.S. Marine Corps Command and General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. The major was a student there and was trying to identify the full citation information for an article that had been photocopied from a French journal.

The year was known, but the volume and issue numbers were missing. Since Old Dominion owns the volume in print, the Ft. Leavenworth librarian decided to call us. After consulting the print volume and then checking the online version of Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory, Renee determined that French publishers do not always use volume numbers. She e-mailed that information to the major directly, providing him with the official citation from Historical Abstracts.

He responded with much gratitude for the rapid and accurate response, using that phrase which all librarians treasure, "It is exactly what I needed."
