Get re-acquainted with the library
Before the semester begins, plan to discover what new services
and resources you might take advantage of, at one of our "Get Re-acquainted"
gatherings for faculty and graduate teaching assistants. The one-hour
sessions will begin with a very brief introduction over light refreshments
in Perry Library 151. Then reference librarians will lead tours
geared to the specific interests of participants.
Pick whichever time best fits your schedule: Thursday, January
6, at 2:00pm or Friday, January 7, at 10:00am. Reservations, though
not required, are helpful to us in planning. To let us know you
plan to attend or for more information, call 683-4185 or email cswaine@odu.edu.
Surf 'n' Turf in the library
Offered to Old Dominion University faculty, staff, and students,
these brief sessions begin at 12:30pm.
In Surf sessions on Tuesdays, January 18 and 25, you will learn
some basic techniques for searching the library catalog, the Internet
and research databases.
In Turf sessions on Thursdays, January 13 and 20, you will see
key areas of the library and learn how to use them.
There is no need to register; interested persons should come to
the lobby and meet the librarian in front of the poster advertising
the session.
TAs & RAs: putting the library to work for you
Are you a graduate assistant with questions about many of the tasks
you've been assigned? Let the library help you find the answers.
This workshop for graduate research and teaching assistants will
cover how to take advantage of important library services, including:
obtaining library materials requested by your professor, getting
materials not owned by the library, charging copying to the department
or faculty grants, borrowing materials in your professor's name,
placing materials on course reserves, and contacting the library
for the help you need.
The workshop will be held on Saturday, January 22, from 9:30 to11:00am
in Perry Library 163. Register with Steve Litherland by email at
slitherl@odu.edu or by telephone at 683-4182. Please indicate your
department when registering.
Baskets for Books
The annual "Baskets for Books" game will be held on January 8. Ticket
sales benefit the library, so come on out-and bring your friends. This
night, both the university and the library could be big winners. To
purchase tickets, call the Athletics Administration Ticket Office at
683-5484 and ask for the "Baskets for Books" tickets.

Literature Resource Center
A comprehensive new database, Literature Resource Center (LRC),
is now available. Included in it are:
- Contemporary Authors
- Dictionary of Literary Biography
- Selected criticisms from Contemporary Literary Criticism
- Merriam-Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature
- Selections from other Gale literary reference sets
- Twayne's Author Series and the Scribner Writers Series.
To access LRC from the library's Web site, select Databases under
Resources; then select the Literature category. Because LRC is available
through the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), IP address restrictions
apply: from home; you'll need to enter your personal UIN at the "Easy
Proxy" page. For more information or to obtain fact sheets, user guides,
etc, go to http://www.gale.com/LitRC.
Free lecture on knee injuries
On January 16 at 2:00pm, the Friends of the Old Dominion University
Library present a lecture by Darden College of Education faculty members
Jim Onate and Bonnie Van Lunen on "Knee Injuries in Female Athlete: the
Lower Extremity Assessment Program (LEAP)." It will be held the conference
room of the Athletic Administration Building.
Another library success story
A distance learning student serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, and stationed
at the National Strike Force Coordination Center, used the "Ask a Librarian"
service to request an article. Staff members found the item and faxed it to
the student very quickly, emailing her to let her know it was on its way.
The student was very impressed, saying, "You have made my life much easier
and I appreciate it tremendously."
Distance Learning Corner
A new online interlibrary loan system, ILLiad, debuted in December.
With ILLiad you can:
- Submit multiple requests during one login session without having to
re-enter your personal information each time
- View the status of your pending requests and a comprehensive
history of completed orders online
- Easily update your personal information online (change of name,
postal address, email address, etc.).
You will need to complete a brief one-time registration process before
submitting orders. Email Stuart Frazer (sfrazer@odu.edu) if you have
questions.
