Faculty workshop on news sources
Let the Government Information Reference Librarian show you how
to find and search efficiently some excellent resources related
to current events. Included will be U.S. government primary sources
as well as databases such as the AccuNet AP Multimedia Archive and
Newsbank. Register for the 12:30 PM, March 24, workshop by contacting
Janet Justis at jjustis@odu.edu or by phone at 683-4169. Registration,
though not required, is helpful to us in planning. Faculty, staff
and graduate students are welcome to attend.
New Associate University Librarian
On March 25, Ann Pettingill will become the Associate University
Librarian. She has been the Head of Reference and Research Services
at Old Dominion University Libraries since 1991. She served as Serials
Librarian from 1983 to 1987. Also, she was employed as a librarian
at California State University and at the Seattle Public Library.
She earned an MSLS degree from the University of North Carolina-Chapel
Hill, an MA in American Studies from California State University,
and a BA in Economics from Vassar College.
Look for two fascinating exhibits
In February, an exhibit for Black History Month features The African
Diaspora: Voices and Rhythms. Beginning March 1, an exhibit on the
theme of women and fashion will be mounted for Women's History Month.
Be sure to enjoy both these exhibits in the lobby of Perry Library.
Companion Web pages may be found at http://www.lib.odu.edu/special/digital-exhibits.htm.
Research workshop for grad students
ODU graduate students are invited to attend a Saturday morning
workshop from 9:30 until 11:30 on March 19 in Room 163 of Perry
Library. The theme is Becoming Expert at Searching Online Research
Databases. Here you will learn advanced search techniques for use
with research databases in finding the information you need. The
library subscribes to some 200 such databases. Let us guide you
through the maze! Register with Nancy Schafer at 683-5909 or by
email at nschafer@odu.edu.
Another library success story
During the Virginia General Assembly, House and Senate documents
are created, providing background information and comprehensive
reports on the bills being debated. These reports are one the major
ways researchers are able to determine the intent of legislation.
In addition to cataloging the paper copies of these documents, the
Library is leading the state in adding "hot-links" in
its catalog to the online versions of the publications. This allows
our library users to retrieve the full text of the documents when
searching the Library's online catalog.

New: CQ Electronic Library

Library for research in American government, politics, history,
public policy and current affairs. Our subscription includes:
- CQ Researcher Online-in-depth, non-biased coverage of political
and social issues
- CQ Voting and Elections Collection-data, authoritative analyses,
explanations, and historical material on the American voter, political
parties, campaigns and elections, and historical and modern races
for Congress, the presidency, and governorships
- CQ Weekly-weekly coverage of the U.S. Congress: status of bills,
votes and amendments, floor and committee activity, and "backroom
maneuvering"
You can access CQ Electronic Library from the library's Databases
page by clicking on "C". It is also available under the
Political Science & Law and Social Sciences database categories.
Because CQEL is available through library subscription, you'll need
to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page if you are working
off campus. If you are asked for a username and password, they are
odu and library, respectively.
New cataloging librarian
We welcome Anne Taylor, who becomes the new Cataloging Services
Librarian on February 25. Most recently she served as Government
Documents Librarian with the Norfolk Public Libraries and previously
served as Head of Technical Services at Hampton University's library.
Her library experience also includes work with NASA, USGS, hospital
and community college libraries. She earned her Master of Library
Science degree from the Catholic University of America.
Distance Learning Corner
For an initial research consultation with a librarian about resources
needed for a research project or paper, distance learners may simply
click on Ask-A-Librarian at the bottom of any of our library web
pages. A reference librarian will respond soon after the request
is made. Alternately, students may choose to email directly the
appropriate librarian from a list of subject specialists at http://www.lib.odu.edu/libassist/guide/selector-index.php.
$400,000 gift to Perry Library
In January, the University announced a $5.4 million Capital Campaign
gift from the estate of Elmer Virginia (E. V.) Williams for the
College of Business and Public Administration. This includes a gift
of $400,000 to Perry
Library.
