Database news
Many additions and improvements to our collection of databases have occurred recently. Among them:
- Ebsco is the new supplier for the ERIC, CINAHL and PsycINFO databases—all formerly available through Ovid.
- Web of Science , an online equivalent of Science Citation Index and Social Science Citation Index , now covers articles going back as far as 1975.
- The new “PowerSearch” feature of Thomson Gale Group databases (including InfoTrac, MLA International Bibliography and others) allows you to search across several databases simultaneously. You will notice other enhancements, too, beginning in September.
- The Ovid database collection now uses a gateway that allows you to find similar articles and citing articles for the articles you identify. Databases include Criminal Justice Abstracts, BIOSIS Previews, SPORTDiscus, Inspec, and Zoological Record .
- Art resources now include the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals and the Grove Art Online database.
- The APA online journal archive, accessible from http://www.lib.odu.edu/resources/ss/psycarticles.htm, will be extended to include all back issues, some published as early as 1894, by the end of the year.
Distance Learning Corner
| Copies of library handbooks for distance learners were mailed to Teletechnet sites and higher education centers in early August. Copies have also been sent as email attachments to site directors. The Web version is available by clicking here. Included are tips for searching online resources, contact information for the library and much more. |
Another library success story
Interlibrary Loan staff received a letter of appreciation from student in April, saying:
“For the last three months I have been trying to locate a scientific article in a Philippine dialect, Tagalog. I have been to several libraries and websites. I have spoken to professors in the Philippines and here in the USA . I have requested articles from ODU online and several other locations.
Finally, through months of searching and with the aid of your staff, I found exactly what I was looking for through the ILL staff at ODU. Now I have ample evidence to convince my committee that the Tagalog language is worth an academic study.
I would like to thank the staff at the ILL service for their commitment to the students of ODU - the help I received clearly showed me how dedicated the staff at ILL is to the success of the students at ODU.”
