Anniversary exhibits on view
Be sure to peruse a new online exhibit titled Building the University , created for the 75th Anniversary of Old Dominion University. The exhibit, located at
http://www. lib.odu.edu/exhibits/odu75thanniversary ,
features some of the prominent buildings on campus and people associated with them. It combines text, photographs, and audio from oral histories that are part of the University Archives housed in Perry Library's Special Collections. A companion exhibit is located in the lobby of Perry Library.
Some full-length books now online
For electronic access to books, try this new approach: from the library's homepage, click on Library catalog and search as you would for any book—by author, title, keyword, etc. At this time, when we have just over 100 electronic books, we recommend that you enter the provider's name, NetLibrary, as an author search. Our first acquisition is a series titled Judaic Scholar Digital Reference Library. We hope to acquire more “e-books” soon.
Another library success story
Heather Baxter from Ryde , Australia wrote to our Ask-a-Librarian service, saying, “I am trying to get a copy of an article from the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot newspaper on my great-grandfather.” Heather provided the exact citation, including the title, “They Played for a Sultan's Harem.” She had not been able to get a copy through the Virginian-Pilot archive and discovered that the Old Dominion University Libraries owned the microfilm. As it turned out, Heather first reported the wrong date, so we couldn't find the article on the first try. Heather then sent another date which turned out to be correct: February 16, 1943.
Heather's great-grandfather, Cyril James Baxter, was then the bandmaster of the British Royal Marine Orchestra, which played in Norfolk as part of the USO Variety Vaudeville show. In a newspaper interview, Baxter recounted their most unusual venue as being Ceylon , where they performed by request for the Sultan of the Maldive Islands and his harem. The library has now provided her a copy of the short article, which included a photo of Baxter with four band members. Heather intends to frame it as a gift for her father. |

Workshop on evidence-based practice
Heath science and other interested graduate students are encouraged to attend a Saturday morning workshop titled Show Me the Evidence on November 5 at 9:30-11:30 in Perry Library, Room 163. Faculty members are also invited.
The concept of evidence-based practice has created a paradigm shift in all areas of health care and health policy. At this library workshop, participants will learn about specialized databases and search strategies that they can use to retrieve evidence-based articles and reviews on topics of their own choice
Not only will participants learn new library skills, but also they will have an opportunity to compare notes with their counterparts in Nursing, Dental Hygiene, and Community and Environmental Health about how evidence-based practice is changing these fields. Registration is required; to register, telephone Renee Davis at 757-683-4484 or email her at rdavis@odu.edu.
