Volume 28, Issue 2, February 2006

Faculty workshops for spring

Mark your calendars for these workshops, open to faculty, staff and graduate students:

February 28: Hidden Treasure: Primary Source Materials in Perry Library—applicable to many fields: drama, women’s studies, political science, history and more

April 12: Where Should I Publish? Paying Attention to Journal Rankings—extremely useful for those looking toward promotion and tenure

Both will be held at 10:00 AM in Perry Library 163. Reservations are requested but not required. Make them by contacting Cynthia Swaine at cwswaine@odu.edu.

New full-text databases now available

The following new databases offer excellent searching capabilities and full-text access to many journals and other documents.

The Digital National Security Archive provides a comprehensive collection of primary documents, including more than 58,000 of the most important declassified documents regarding critical U.S. policy decisions. There are 26 complete collections, each offering specialized insights.

Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full-Text Collection includes the full text of 38 journals published by SAGE and participating societies. Some journals go back 57 years, encompassing over 10,000 articles.

Political Science: A SAGE Full-Text Collection includes the full-text of 25 journals published by SAGE and participating societies.  Some journals go back 24 years, encompassing over 10,000 articles.

Get access to these new resources from the library's Web site by clicking on Databases, then choosing either the title or the subject category approach.  Because these resources are subscription-based, IP address restrictions apply: from home, you will need to enter your Campus UIN at the Easy Proxy page.

New Head of Reference & Research

Elizabeth Vihnanek has accepted the Head of Reference and Research Services position, effective February 10.  She comes to us from Western Carolina University's Hunter Library where she was Director of Curriculum Materials/Maps Center.  Previously Vihnanek served as Head of Reference Services for Concordia University in River Forest, Illinois.  She holds an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Concordia College and an MLS from Rosary College.

Blackboard: Linking to articles

The library provides many full-text resources through subscription databases and electronic journal collections.  One option faculty members have is to provide links from Blackboard or other Web sites to materials in these databases.  For more information, click on Services to faculty from the library Web page.

Distance Learning Corner

The library has now made available an online collection of handbooks, dictionaries, and encyclopedias that distance learners may find especially helpful. Chemistry, fashion, political science, religion and more are included. Just type  Gale Virtual Reference Library as a title in the library catalog to find any of the 33 reference “books.”

Another library success story

On a cold January afternoon, Steve Litherland was ready to lead a 30-minute session in our Surf ‘n’ Turf series of orientations for the university community. The only person who ventured out to attend was a distance learner who had driven nearly a hundred miles to campus that day. Rather than follow his prescribed program, Steve turned the session into a consultation based on the student’s own special needs.

He spent nearly an hour answering her questions about the CINAHL database, getting her set up with ILLiad (our interlibrary loan system), showing her how to find print and electronic journals, and looking up her course readings on electronic reserve. He also gave her the 800 number she could use to call the university’s Office of Distance Learning and be transferred to the library.

What might have been a 200-mile round trip for a brief orientation turned into a customized consultation that set this student on a path to success in doing library research.
