Who's Citing You?

Are you thinking ahead to the promotion and tenure process? Learn how to document who has cited your publications, using citation databases to which the library subscribes. Also earn how to select the best journals to publish in, based on impact factor.

Plan to attend a session titled Who's Citing You? on Wednesday, October 11, 2:00-3:00 PM in Room 163 of Perry Library. Registration is not required but is helpful to us in planning. For more information or to register, email Karen Vaughan at kvaughan@odu.edu.

Annual book sale, November 1-4

Definitely the place to be for bargains, the annual sale of used books will be held November 1-3 from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM and on November 4 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM in Room 151 of Perry Library. A special preview for members of the Friends of the Library will be held Tuesday, October 31 from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Not an official Friend? Interested in joining? In addition to books, various other media will be available. Come, browse, and buy. Your purchases support a special award program for students employed by the University Libraries.

Want to contribute items to the sale? Bring your own books, DVDs, VHS videos, music CDs, etc. to the circulation desk in the lobby of Perry Library.

Coming: Annual Literary Festival

Old Dominion University’s 29th Annual Literary Festival will be held October 16-20, 2006.  With this year’s “Colonial Connections” theme, a dozen authors

will be reading fiction, poetry and essays in a number of venues.  For more information about festival participants and an archive of all past festivals, visit the web site.

Science database training sessions

In October, the Reference and Research Department will sponsor some training sessions led by instructors from database vendors. Get good help with Elsevier’s ScienceDirect on October 2 at 1:30 PM. Science Direct indexes high-quality, peer-reviewed research journals in the sciences and includes links to many full text articles.

Learn more about searching the Cambridge CSA Illumina databases on October 12 at 10:00 AM. Dozens of Cambridge databases include ones focusing on life sciences, environmental and aquatic sciences, computer sciences, materials sciences and engineering, aerospace, as well as social sciences and humanities.

Open to faculty, staff and graduate assistants, these sessions will be held in Perry Library, Room 163.  For more information or to register, email Karen Vaughan at kvaughan@odu.edu.

Distance Learning Corner

Are you a graduate student taking classes from a Teletechnet site or a higher education center? You may want to look at recent theses or dissertations written by previous Old Dominion students. The library provides access to two databases that include such works.

From the library’s home page at click on Databases. Then select Multidisciplinary from the category listings. Here you will find both databases, Current Research@ and Dissertations and Theses Full Text. You can search by entering key words or the author’s name..

Another library success story

Recently a woman called the Perry Library reference desk to say that she was using the library's oral histories web site but that the audio wasn't working. Karen Vaughan, Digital Services Coordinator, happened to be at the desk then and was able to talk with her. The woman had been a piano student who took classes from Eliot Breneiser and who also taught for the Academy of Music. She stumbled on the oral histories site and read the transcript of an interview with Mr. Breneiser, as well as other interview transcripts. She very much wanted to hear his voice. She was very complimentary and appreciative of the web site. Karen arranged for the audio to be fixed and then notified the woman that it was working correctly. Below is her response, in part.

Thank you so much for getting the system up and running! It meant a great deal to me to be able to hear ....for the first time in nine years...the voice of someone who was one the greatest influences in my life. We are so fortunate when we have the opportunity to study with someone who, in addition to believing in a student's ability, makes it clear that they also believe in the student as a person....their character, their dreams and the paths they may follow in their pursuit of a meaningful life. This was one of Mr. Breneiser's many strengths. He made each of us feel that we mattered, and had something unique to offer.

I look forward to sharing the information about this wonderful site with others who studied with him. The mere fact that we are still in touch thirty years later says something of the importance of those years to each of us. Thank you again.
