True to it's promise, the 15th annual Literary Arts Festival, "Words at Play" offered patrons a sampling of unconventional presentations this year. Above, novelist Paul West gives a fiction reading of his latest novel, "The Women of White Chapel and Jack the Ripper," accompanied on stage by Marilyn Marloff and Mary Bond. Marloff, assistant professor of theatre arts, created original dance pieces for the reading, a retelling of the Jack the Ripper story which concentrated on the tangled lives of his downtrodden victims. At left, north Carolina novelist, poet and snake handler Tim McLaurin, with snake in hand, takes time between poetry readings to explain the difference between the poisonous and non-poisonous reptiles.
