Paula Allen

Paula Allen's photographs documenting women's invisible histories around the world have been widely acclaimed for nearly two decades. Her work has appeared in U.S. News & World Report, The New York Times Magazine, Paris Match, and Art in America among others. Her long term documentary projects include the war and aftermath in Kosovo, the efforts of Chilean mothers of the "disappeared" to find the remains of their loved ones, "The Troubles" in northern Ireland, and underground nightlife in Havana. Flores en el desierto / Flowers in the Desert, her bilingual book on the women of Calama, Chile, was published in 1999.

She is a recipient of both a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship and a Montana Committee for the Humanities grant for her work. She is currently collaborating with a writer and film crew in Africa and Asia to document the controversy, misery, ecstacy, and pain surrounding women's bodies. [extracted from 2000 brochure]
