HISTORY
Old Dominion University Libraries and Hampton University's Harvey Library co-sponsored a concert and exhibit of Hampton University Composers of the twentieth century. The concert was at ODU in Chandler Hall on September 19, 1999 and at Hampton University at Robrt C. Ogden Hall on October 17, 1999. R. Nathaniel Dett's "Ramah: Air Characteristic" (1923), Clarence Cameron White's "Five Songs, op. 39" (1946), William Shannon Stoney's "Trio No. 1" (1989), Jon Michael Spencer's "Confide in Sleep Eternal : A Dramatic Poem" (1983), and Harvey J. Stokes's "String Quartet No. 4" (1998) were performed.
The exhibit was displayed at ODU from September 19 to October 1 and at Hampton University from October 17 to November 1. The exhibit included Hampton University faculty members Robert Nathaniel Dett, Clarence Cameron White, Noah Francis Ryder, Dominic Argento, Noel DaCosta, William Shannon Stoney, Roland Carter, Jon Michael Spencer, and Harvey Jeffrey Stokes. A student, Dorothy Mainor (stage name Dorothy Maynor), was also part of the display. The Diehn Composers Room presented an online exhibit, entitled "From Exposition to Development: The Legacy of Composers at Hampton University," as part of the event.
The Hampton University Composers Collection consists of three boxes of Diehn Composers Room exihibit material (event "keepsakes," concert programs, and invitations) as well as recordings of the event.
