BIOGRAPHY
Walter Beghtol Ross was born on October 3, 1936 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Robert Thurber and Barbara Adeline (Ellis) Ross. On July 22, 1960 he married Marion Helen Wright, and they had one son, Douglas Campbell. Ross earned a B.Mus. from the University of Nebraska in 1960, after studying with Robert Beadell, and a M.Mus. in 1962, studying conducting with Karen Husa and composition with Robert Palmer. In 1965 he studied with Alberto Ginastero at Centro de Altos Estudios Musicales in Buenas Aires, and was granted a D.Mus.Arts from Cornell in 1966. He was an Assistant Professor of Music at CUNY Cortland 1966-1967 and has been Professor of Music (Composition) at University of Virginia since 1967.
Dr. Ross's musical compositions include pieces for "symphony orchestras, symphonic bands, brass, chamber music, piano, voice, opera, theater, and film." He has been a member of American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers; Tubists International Brotherhood Association; and the Southern Composers League, of which he was president 1975-1977.
Walter B. Ross is included in several biographical works. The information above was taken from four of them - Who's Who in America, 2002 (quoted above); International Who's Who in Music and Musician's Directory, 1990/91; Baker's Biographical Dictionary of Musicians, Eighth Edition; and Contemporary American Composers, Second Edition.
The Walter Ross Collection contains several scores and parts, some biographical material, and two compact discs.
