A VALID ODU IDENTIFICATION CARD OR ODU LIBRARY CARD is required for use of Listening Library facilities or materials. The Reading Room, an area designated for use with the Library's special collections, is available by appointment.
LPs, COMPACT DISCS, CASSETTES, AND SCORES: All Listening Library items are cataloged into the Online Public Catalog. Records and compact discs may be used by patrons inside the Listening Library by any patron with valid ODU i.d., or checked out by faculty, staff, or graduate students of ODU. LPs do not circulate to undergraduates. LPs and CDs can circulate to faculty, staff, and graduate students for two weeks; renewals are permitted provided that there are no holds on the item(s). Cassettes may be checked out by all valid library card holders. Scores, including collected works editions of major composers, are shelved by call number in the Listening Library and may be checked out by all valid library card holders. All periodicals are located on the second floor of the main library, with the exception of the microfilm cartridge collection of selected periodical titles that is used with the Infotrac system in the Reference and Research Services. When researching a topic in depth, consult the music periodical indexes as well as the other music research tools located in the Reference and Research Services Department in the main library.
GAY COLLECTION CASSETTES AND LPs: The GEORGE GAY COLLECTION is a large "special" collection of classical recordings from the 1950s to early 1960s. Many of these are of a rare record quality. The Gay Collection LPs do not circulate, but copies of the entire collection are available on cassettes. These cassettes may be checked out by any patron with a valid ODU library card for a two week loan period or used inside the Listening Library.
PRESIDENT'S LECTURE SERIES: Lectures given in this series (under the auspices of the Office of the President) are available on videocassette for holders of an ODU Library Card or ID. Audiocassettes for some of the lectures are available for in-house listening for anyone presenting personal identification.
LOANS, RENEWALS, AND FINES: All borrowers are personally responsible for the safety, proper use, and timely return of all library materials charged to them. Listening Library materials should be returned to that room and not placed in the book drop where they could be damaged or desensitized. Fines for overdue materials accrue at the rate of $.10 per item per day up to the cost of replacement of the item. Items on reserve are fined at a higher rate. The borrower is charged $25.00 for most lost or damaged recordings; other materials are priced from Acquisition Price Sources. Patrons may renew their own items at any available online catalog terminal in the library, by dial-in access to the online catalog from outside the library, or in person at the Listening Library. Renewals by phone are not accepted. Renewals by electronic mail are accepted.
RESERVE RECORDINGS AND BOOKS/SCORES: At the beginning of each semester, music professors require certain musical works to be reserved for their students. Normally, the works are compiled onto cassette tapes of 60-minute duration for easy access. Students may listen to these tapes in the Listening Library. Reserve tapes do not circulate. Students always have the option to research alternate performances from the ones used on reserve tapes. Staff can assist in this research if needed. Books and scores are reserved by music professors each semester to enhance research and provide additional study material for their students. These items may be checked-out to students for three hours at a time. Some books/scores may circulate overnight if checked-out within an hour of closing time. Some items, such as music reference materials or professors' personal copies, may not be checked-out overnight.
MUSIC REFERENCE MATERIALS such as the Silver Burdette Music Education Series, Groves' Dictionary of Music, bibliographies and thematic indexes of some composers, as well as catalogs pertaining to recordings (Schwann's Opus, Spectrum and Artist Issue) are available for use within in the Listening Library.
AUDIO/VIDEO SELF-SERVICE STATIONS which allow patrons to fully use the materials housed in the Listening Library are available by reservation for up to two hours at a time. A station is held for patrons up to fifteen minutes past the hour for which it was reserved. After that time, patrons who do not come in forfeit their reservation in deference to those who may be waiting. AM/FM receivers are available for local broadcasting radio stations.
