HISTORY
The New Music Performance (NMP) Collection is a cooperative project of the Virginia Tidewater Consortium libraries to serve music faculty members who incorporate new music in their teaching. Participating institutions include Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University, Norfolk State University, and the College of William and Mary. The project was originally conceived by Dr. Jean Major, University Librarian for Old Dominion University Libraries in the year 2000. A committee was first formed, comprised of Tidewater Consortium librarians, to develop the project idea further, map out the web site design, and develop a survey of music faculty from each participating institution. In 2001, an Advisory Board committee was formed to include music faculty members and further develop and revise the web site database and design. The Norfolk Foundation provides funding for the project through a grant.
The New Music Performance Supplement (NMPS) Collection is the archival part of the New Music Performance Collection. The NMPS Collection is comprised of scores by individual composers who are not associated with a Diehn Composers Room event or organization. Both the New Music Performance Supplement (NMPS) Collection and the New Music Performance (NMP) Collection are housed in the Old Dominion University's Diehn Composers Room.
The goal of the New Music Performance Collection is to develop a collection of scores, without parts, that provide opportunities for students to perform new music. Many of the materials in the collection are suitable for performance by undergraduate level ensembles. The New Music Performance Collection actively collects compositions selected by a juried process. For example, compositions selected for conference programs of national or regional organizations or winners of a recognized competition are sought. Also, works commissioned by recognized ensembles or performers or those recommended by a music faculty member are desired. Composers may also submit scores to the New Music Performance Collection. Compositions are accessible through a Web-based database and the online catalog of the Old Dominion University Libraries. The archival New Music Performance Supplement Collection contains scores by individual composers who are not associated with a DCR event or group.
