The New Music Performance Collection is a cooperative project of the
Virginia Tidewater Consortium libraries to serve music faculty members
who incorporate new music in their teaching. Participating institutions
include Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Christopher Newport
University, Norfolk State University, and the College of William and
Mary. The project was originally conceived in the year 2000 by Dr. Jean
Major, University Librarian for Old Dominion University Libraries. A
committee was first formed, comprised of Tidewater Consortium librarians,
to develop the project idea further, map out the website design, and
develop a survey of music faculty from each participating institution.
In 2001, an Advisory Board was formed to include music faculty members
and further develop and revise the website database and design. The
Norfolk Foundation provides funding for the project through a grant.
The goal of The New Music Performance Collection is to develop a collection
of scores that provide opportunities for students to perform new music.
Many materials in the collection are suitable for performance by undergraduate
level ensembles. Although most of the pieces in the collection were
composed by people who have college or university affiliation, any composition
that meets the criteria listed below is eligible for inclusion. The
New Music Performance Collection actively collects compositions that
have been selected by a juried process and were created after 1970 by
active. living composers. For example:
Compositions are searchable through a web-based database and the online
catalog of the Old Dominion University Libraries. Access to these materials
is provided for educational and research purposes only. The written permission
of the copyright owners and/or other rights holders is required for distribution,
reproduction, or other use of protected items beyond that allowed by fair
use or other statutory exemptions.
