EndNote Instructions - Direct Export Databases

Export Citations from ODU Online Databases Directly into EndNote

EBSCOhost -- Engineering Village -- Gale -- Google Schoolar -- JSTOR -- OVID -- Project Muse -- ProQuest -- PsycINFO -- Science Direct -- SciFinder Web -- Web of Science

Each of our databases has its own way to present citation information. EndNote works with many of them to allow a direct export from the database into your EndNote library. 

Basic Instructions for DIRECT EXPORT:

  1. Open your EndNote library before beginning your database search.
  2. Perform your search of the database.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export.
  3. View marked items (from folder or other place on screen).
  4. Select option for Export to EndNote, or Direct Export, or export from “Citation Tools” option.
  5. Select and open your EndNote library.
  6. [You may need to choose the import filter for the database you searched, or a different database in the same database system.]
  7. Citations should now be available in your EndNote library

Database-Specific Instructions:

Open EndNote before beginning your database search.
After exporting citations, be sure to clean up formatting and review citations for accuracy in EndNote.

EbscoHost Databases

(Academic Search Complete; America History & Life; CINAHL; Communication & Mass Media Complete; Education Research Complete; ERIC; Historical Abstracts; SportDiscus; etc)

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export by clicking ADD TO FOLDER under the citation.
  2. Click FOLDER VIEW on the right (or at top) to view marked items.
  3. On the Marked Items list, click SELECT ALL (or choose specific items); then click the EXPORT icon (with green arrow). direct exort icon
  4. Select DIRECT EXPORT TO ENDNOTE…”  (It is a good idea to un-check “Remove these items…” in case you need to get back to them.)  Then, SAVE.
  5. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

Engineering Village

(Compendex; Inspec)

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export.
  2. Click DOWNLOAD at top; then choose "RIS, Endnote…"; then, DOWNLOAD.
  3. In the "File Download" box, click OPEN.
  4. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

Gale Databases 

(Literature Resource Center, MLA Int’l Bibliography)

  1. Perform your search.  Mark desired records to export.
  2. Click on “Marked Items” at top. Marked items will display.
  3. Click “Citation Tools” in “Tools” box.
  4. From “Export to third party software” options, select “EndNote” and click “Export.”
  5. In the “File Download” box, click “Open.”
  6. Select your EndNote library.  References should appear.

Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com)

Be sureEndNote is set up in the “Bibliography Manager” in your “Scholar Preferences.”

  1. Perform your search. Within your list of citations, click IMPORT INTO ENDNOTE for each individual citation you wish to export.
  2. In the "File Download" box, click OPEN.
  3. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

JSTOR  

If you don't already have one, you will need to create a My JSTOR account to export multiple citations.

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, mark items to save.
  2. Go to MyJSTOR -- "Saved Citations."
  3. Select All items (or choose again)
    1. If you only wish to export one citation at a time, click on the title to view the full citation, then continue with #3.
  4. Click EXPORT CITATIONS; then, click "RIS file..."; then, OPEN.
  5. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

OVID

(EBM Reviews; Philosopher’s Index; etc)

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export.
  2. Click EXPORT on top toolbar. Then select "Export to: ENDNOTE." Then EXPORT CITATIONS.
  3. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

Project Muse

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export. You will need to "Save Marked Results" before moving to the next page.
  2. Click VIEW SAVED RESULTS at right.
  3. On "Saved Results" page, select ENDNOTE and click EXPORT.
  4. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

ProQuest

(ABI/Inform; Dissertations/Theses FullText; etc)

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export.
  2. View marked items from the "My Research" tab at top.
  3. Select EXPORT CITATIONS...; then, "EXPORT DIRECTLY TO PROCITE, ENDNOTE....
  4. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

PsycINFO (APA)

Note: If using Internet Explorer, be sure to turn off the Pop-Up Blocker (Under "Tools") first.

  1. Perform your search.  Mark records to be exported.
  2. Click the"Export" icon at top; then, Export to "Reference Software"; then, GO
  3. In the "File Download" box, click OPEN.
  4. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

Science Direct

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export.
  2. Click the EXPORT CITATIONS icon.
  3. Choose "RIS format..."; then EXPORT.
  4. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

SciFinder Web

  1. Perform your search. Mark the records you wish to export to EndNote.
  2. Click KEEP SELECTED; then SELECT ALL or choose.
  3. Click EXPORT. Name your file, then select "Citation export format (*.ris).
    1. If popup block appears, click the message line and then select "Download File..." -- You may need to repeat Step 3.
  4. In the File Download box, select OPEN.
  5. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.

Web of Science

(Arts & Humanities Citation Index; Science Citation Index; Social Sciences Citation Index; BIOSIS; Zoological Record)

  1. Perform your search.  From your results screen, select an item or mark items to export. Before moving to the next page, you need to click "Add to Marked List." View marked items from the "Marked List" option at top.
  2. Choose “Save to Endnote, RefMan, ProCite.” Then, "Export."
  3. Select and open your EndNote library. Citations should now be available in EndNote.
