6d. What is a journal?
What are some other ways to tell whether a publication is a journal?
- Many databases cover only scholarly publications, not popular ones. Read the statement that tells about the database to determine whether the publications are scholarly or popular. This information usually appears on the front page of the database. Examples of databases that cover only scholarly sources are Medline, Sociological Abstracts and PsycINFO, but there are many others also.
- Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory can help you discover whether or not a periodical is published by a professional society or association.
