Biography
Doctor G. William Whitehurst is a professor at Old Dominion University. Doctor Whitehurst has had a long life in local and state politics. Doctor Whitehurst earned his M. A. at University of Virginia and his Ph.D. at West Virginia University. He was the Dean of Students and a professor at Old Dominion University from 1963 to 1968, and in 1968 was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's Second District. He was a key member of the House Armed Services Committee and spent six-year term on the Committee on Intelligence. Whitehurst also spent two years on the Ethics Committee.
Doctor Whitehurst retired from Congress in January 1987 and became a professor once again at Old Dominion University. Many of the classes he teaches are political science courses and political history courses.
Scope and Contents
This collection consists of nineteen bound Congressional dairies spanning from 1969 to 1986. Six scrap books consisting of newspaper clippings, magazines, pictures and other documents relating to Doctor William Whitehurst's tenure in the House of Representatives.
Series Descriptions
The collection is broken down into the following series: I Whitehurst Congressional Diaries. II Scrapbooks. The collection consists of 19 bound Congressional diaries spanning from 1969 to 1986 and six scrap books from 1970 to 1986. The scrapbooks contain of pictures, newspaper clippings, bumper stickers, magazines, cards, invitations and magazine articles about Whitehurst’s running for local office.
Series One: Whitehurst Congressional diaries
This series contains 19 bound Congressional diaries from 1969 to 1986 in chronological order.
Series Two: Scrapbooks
This series has 6 scrapbooks that contain pictures, newspaper, clippings, bumper stickers, magazines, cards, and invitations all related to Dr. Whitehurst. The scrapbooks are from 1970 to 1984 in chronological order. Scrapbook One contains invitations to the White House from the Nixons, articles about Janie Whitehurst, bills that were passed, letters from President Nixon, animal rights and Burlage. Articles were in the Virginian Pilot, Ledger-Star and the Beacon. Scrapbook Two contains an invitation to a prayer breakfast at White House, articles about animal rights, Dr. Whitehurst’s views on abortions, abortions and Watergate. Articles were in the Virginian pilot, the Ledger-Star and the Beacon. Scrapbook Three contains Whitehurst's net worth information, articles on the impeachment of President Nixon, Wild Life Federation, Nixon; Whitehurst reelection brochures, sample ballots, articles about the extinction of the Strip on Hampton and Taussig Boulevard in Norfolk, South Africa trip for Whitehurst, Norfolk federal building construction articles. Articles were in the Virginian Pilot, the Ledger-Star, the Beacon, and the Washington Star. Scrapbook Four contains articles about Whitehurst's conservative rating, trip to Republic of China, reelection artifacts, dedications of Kaufman Mall at ODU, articles on the bicentennial year celebrations. Articles were in the Virginian Pilot, the Ledger-Star and the Beacon. Scrapbook Five contains dedications of Kaufman mall at ODU and articles on the bicentennial year celebrations. Articles were in the Virginian pilot, the Ledger-Star and the Beacon. Scrapbook Six contains pictures of Whitehurst, a telegram from John J. Rhodes, Pollution bill, Education bill, Whitehurst articles about his legislative diary, article about German war art and Whitehurst’s collection of war art, and regional zoo proposed. Articles were in the Virginian Pilot, the Ledger-Star and the Beacon.
