University Library Collection
Historical Sketch
The library began in 1930 when the College
of William and Mary established the Norfolk Division as a two-year college.
At the time, all college facilities including the library were housed
in Room 18 of the vacant 1912 Larchmont elementary school. The library
started with around 200 volumes donated by Norfolk residents and college
professors. In September 1936, the library moved to a single room at the
south end of the first floor of the newly constructed Administration building.
According to Dr. Jean Major's Old Dominion University Library history,
"the library space was a single room with tables and chairs to seat
60 users." By 1952, this room had expanded to include space that
was formerly the men's locker room and the library featured a new periodical
room, reserve room, and listening room on the second floor of the building.
While growth of the library was slow as both the College and the library
were struggling, there were 25,000 volumes of books on the shelves by
1954. By 1956, the space formerly occupied by the college's bookstore
was added to the library's square footage but even more room was needed.
Robert Morton Hughes Library
In 1957, construction of the $1.1-million Robert Morton
Hughes Memorial Library began. The new building was located at the corner
of 49th Street and Hampton Boulevard. Robert Morton Hughes was a Norfolk
maritime lawyer, a book collector, and a one-time rector of the William
and Mary board of visitors. The new library opened in September 1959 holding
about 50,000 volumes. The new building was dedicated on October 17, 1959.
At the time, only the first floor of the building was used for the library.
The second floor was used for classroom instruction with the understanding
that as the library's needs grew the space would become part of the library.
The library continued to grow until the college gained its independence
in 1962, becoming Old Dominion College. As an independent college, pressure
mounted for the library to increase its holdings, especially scholarly
journals needed by graduate programs. As part of a relatively new and
fast growing college, the library was continually "under-booked"
during its early decades. In 1964, the library was designated a depository
for government documents and documents of the Atomic Energy Commission.
In September 1968, the second floor of Hughes Library opened for library
use. In September 1969, Old Dominion College became Old Dominion University.
A new $14.6-million library construction project was introduced
in 1973, as the old building had overrun its capacity for both books and
students. Construction began in December 1973. The new four-story brick
library was completed in 1976, located at its present location off 43rd
Street. The building was constructed in an inverted pyramid design with
floor space increasing on each of its four floors. It had space for more
than 610,000 volumes of books, whereas the old building only had the capacity
for 225,000 volumes. The library retained its name as the Robert Morton
Hughes Library.
J. Douglas and Patricia W. Perry Library
Proposals for renovation once again came in October 1992
as the library began experiencing overcrowding. Actual construction began
in December 1995, and was completed in February 1998. A dedication ceremony
took place in May 1998. Renovations included additions to the west, north,
and east sides of the building that added an extra 76,640 feet to the
building. In conjunction with these renovations, more rooms were planned
in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Building for Library use.
In the 1990's, information technology increased and the
Library had to keep up with it. In addition to online card catalogs, the
Library began to use more internet resources including VIVA, the Virtual
Library of Virginia, a consortium of state colleges in Virginia formed
to share electronic resources; and added access to online internet databases
including over 1,000 full-text journals.
The Library Building was renamed the Douglas and Patricia
Perry Library in honor of their $4 million gift to the Campaign for Old
Dominion University. The naming was a result of a Board of Visitors vote
on December 10, 1998. The dedication ceremony took place on April 15,
1999. Douglas Perry was the chairman of the board of Dollar Tree Stores.
He served on the Old Dominion University's Educational Foundation Board.
His wife, Patricia Perry, is
a 1989 ODU graduate and a member of the Board of Visitors.
Other areas of the Library were named and dedicated at
that time:
The Library Administrative area was named for
Lee and Helen Gifford. Lee Gifford, who died in 1996, owned Haygood Management
Inc. Helen Goodman Gifford is part of the family that owned The Famous,
a Portsmouth women's clothing store.
The Library Digital Services Center was named for Bette Browning.
Browning received her bachelor's and master's degrees at ODU in 1990 and
1994. As a student, she was a daily user of the library.
The Library Entry Plaza was named for Edward and Janice Reed.
Edward Reed is president of Givens Inc. of Chesapeake, and a 1972 ODU
graduate.
The Library Photocopy Corridor is named for Ira and Jean Steingold.
Ira Steingold is a longtime library donor, lifelong resident of Hampton
Roads, and a Portsmouth attorney.
The Library Research Study is named for Sady Villafranca, an
import-export businessman in Honduras. His son, Alain graduated ODU in
1995 with his graduate degree in economics.
Other Libraries
In addition to the main University Library, smaller specialized
Libraries are part of the ODU Library system. These include the Hofheimer
Art Library and the Diehn Composer's Room.
F. Ludwig Diehn Composer's Room
Proposals for construction of Diehn Composers Room as
an addition to the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts building located on
the corner of Elkhorn and 49th Street came in May 1994. The groundbreaking
ceremony was June 20 1996. Work was completed in May 1997, and the room
was officially opened December 19, 1997. The 6,502 square feet building
holds 20th Century musical compositions, a listening room, and a reading
room.
The room is named after F. Ludwig Diehn, a German businessman
and composer. Diehn left Germany in 1937 and moved to the U.S. In 1940,
he began composing full time. The Diehn collection was presented to ODU
in 1993. Diehn died in 1995.
Elise N. Hofheimer Art Library
Originally founded in 1963, the Art Library began as a
small room in the Fine Arts Building funded by a donation from Elise Hofheimer,
who believed that art students needed a lounge-study area within the art
department. Over the years, Mrs. Hofheimer donated books, shelves, and
other items to make the Art Library an oasis for students. In 1981, the
art library incorporated adjacent classroom space into its space. At the
same time, Linda Hofheimer Kaufman, one of Elise Hofheimer's daughters,
donated carpeting, furniture, and bookshelves in honor of her mother.
On March 24, 1982, the library was formally dedicated as the Elise N.
Hofheimer Art Library.
In 1988, the University began to plan for a new Fine and
Performing Arts Building. During its construction, the Art Library was
temporarily relocated to the main Library building. With the completion
of the new building, the Art Library moved to the new Fine and Performing
Arts Building on June 12, 1991.
Special Collections
The Special Collections at the ODU Library houses the
University Archives, including theses and dissertations, yearbooks, university
publications, university records, and photographs; manuscript collections
