The Records of ODU University RelationsHistorical SketchUniversity Relations has been part of Old Dominion University since its days as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. Prior to 1949, the Division’s Director handled all public relations. In 1949 it was also known as the Committee on Publications and Public Relations. Dorothy Lippincott was named Director of College Relations and Placement in 1958. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, University Relations worked with Collegiate Licensing and many other companies to design and produce Old Dominion memorabilia and clothing. Today, it is part of the Office of Institutional Advancement. University Relations supports the efforts of the Office of Institutional Advancement through media relations, public information, the publication of periodicals and a daily news Web page, and photography. They also provide comprehensive public relations services toward the goal of promoting the advancement of knowledge and offering leadership to the state and nation in teaching, research and service. Scope and ContentsThis collection contains records from the Office of the Vice President of University Relations as well as from the Office of Information Services, whose predecessor was Collegiate Relations. It includes correspondence, bumper stickers, reports and product approvals. Internal and external public relations publications such as brochures and newspaper clippings are also included. Topics include 1970s budget crisis and civil rights compliance. Of interest is the first proposal of ODU’s Equal Opportunity Policy and Affirmative Action Plan (Series I: Civil Rights, March 1973-June 1973) and the showing of $5 million dollars’ worth of Nike missile equipment at Norview High School in 1960. The Licensing series contains product samples and information on logos and copyrighting. Of particular interest is the ODU Cross Stitch Kit (Series I: Licensing, Product Approvals - H). This collection dates from 1958 to 2005. Series DescriptionsThe collection is divided into the following series: Series I: Civil Rights. This series contains papers from 1971 to 1973 pertaining to Civil Rights at ODU and in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Series II: Licensing. This series contains information and records dealing with licensing of Old Dominion University branded products such as clothing and memorabilia. This series dates from 1987 to 1993. It is organized alphabetically. Series III: Publications. This series is comprised of two sub-series: Annual Reports and Miscellaneous Publications. The series dates from 1966 to 2005.
Series IV: Public Relations. This series contains various public relations and advertising records of university departments, from the Alumni Association to Speech. It also contains the Annual Placement Reports from 1958 to 1966.It is ordered alphabetically and dates from c. 1956 to 1973. Related MaterialsIn relation to the Public Relations folders “School of Business Reserve” and “University Relations Studies”, the records of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research (RG18-26A) might be of interest. In relation to the Public Relations folder “School of Dental Hygiene”, the Dental Association of Norfolk and Portsmouth Minutes 1880-1888 (MG 99) might be of interest.
