The Virginia Symphony League Papers
Historical Sketch
The purpose of the Virginia Symphony League is to support and promote the Virginia Symphony through fund-raising and such other endeavors as it may deem appropriate or as may be appointed to it by the Virginia Symphony Chairman or Board of Directors. The Virginia Symphony League functions as a standing committee of the Virginia Symphony.
Scope and Contents
This collection is broken into twelve series: I. Administrative; II. Board of Directors; III. Committees; IV. Correspondence; V. Financial; VI. Fundraisers; VII. Meetings; VIII. Membership; IX. Miscellaneous Events; X. Miscellaneous; XI. Publicity; and XII. Reports.
Series I: Administrative. This series contains administrative materials of the Virginia Symphony League. Included are by-laws; descriptions of responsibilities for board members and committee chairs; meeting procedures; stationary orders; League history, and schedules. Material in this series is dated alphabetically, as many of the materials are undated.
Series II: Board of Directors. This series contains membership rosters for the Virginia Symphony League Board of Directors. Materials date from 1985 to 2001, and are arranged chronologically.
Series III: Committees. This series contains materials related to Virginia Symphony League committees. Included are the After Concert Party Committee; the Boutique Committee; the Nominating Committee; and the Raffle Committee. Materials date from 1982 to 2006. They are arranged alphabetically by committee name.
Sub-series IV: Correspondence. This series contains correspondence of the Virginia Symphony League, including letters from the Virginia Symphony Orchestra Executive Directors. Material dates from 1997-2005, and is arranged chronologically.
Series V: Financial. This series contains financial information for the Virginia Symphony League. Included are audits, budgets, cash receipts and disbursements, donation information, financial statements, reports, tax exemption information; and other related financial records. Materials date from 1980 to 2002. They are arranged alphabetically by topic and then chronologically.
Series VI: Fundraisers. This series contains materials related to Virginia Symphony League fundraisers. Included are materials on auctions, benefits, the Boutique, the annual car raffle, fashion shows, marathons, and pledge campaigns. Materials date from 1981 to 2004. They are arranged alphabetically by type or name of fundraiser and then chronologically.
Series VII: Meetings. This series contains agendas, minutes, and schedules for Virginia Symphony League annual meetings, board of directors meetings, general membership meetings, and strategic planning meetings. Materials date from 1986-2005. They are arranged alphabetically by type of meeting and then chronologically.
Series VIII: Membership. This series contains membership rosters, directories, and contact information changes. Material is arranged chronologically and dates from 1982 to 2005.
Series IX: Miscellaneous Events. This series contains information on other events of the Virginia Symphony League that weren’t necessarily fundraisers. Material dates from 1982 to 2002. Material is arranged alphabetically.
Series X: Miscellaneous. This series contains miscellaneous materials related to the Virginia Symphony League that didn’t fit well into other sub-series. Material dates from 1982 to 2004. Material is arranged alphabetically.
Series XI: Newsletters. This series contains newsletters of the Virginia Symphony League. Material is arranged chronologically and dates from 1979 to 2005.
Series XII: Publicity. This series includes advertisements, news clippings, flyers, pamphlets, press releases, and other related items. Material dates from 1992 to 2005. Material is arranged alphabetically.
Series XIII: Reports. This series includes annual reports, membership reports, New Dimension reports, Virginia Symphony League Reports to the Virginia Symphony Board, and volunteer reports. Materials date from 1984 to 2002. Material is arranged alphabetically by type of report and then chronologically.
