Course 495/595, Fall 1982
1. Interview with Sara Mueller Chip regarding women in religion. Instrumental
in bringing the first ordained Episcopal women priest to the Tidewater
area. Conducted November 5, 1982.
2. Interview with Pat Merchant Park regarding women in religion. In
1982 became the first women priest to preach for the Diocese of Southern
Virginia at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. Especially
important due to the well publicized desire of the presiding Bishop at
the time to prevent women becoming ordained in this diocese. This interview
recounts her experiences.
3. Interview with Ruth James regarding Norfolk's bout with massive resistance
in 1958. Lead litigant in the court cases initiated to reopen the closed
schools. Recounts the experiences and prejudices encountered during this
effort. Conducted November 5, 1982.
4. Interview with Edith White (wife of Forrest P. White, prominent leader in the Norfolk Committee for Public Schools)
Primarily concerns her and her family's experiences during the crisis and
the role of women in Virginia politics during the 1950's. Conducted November
6, 1982.
5. Women Physicians in Tidewater 1945-1960: Interview with Dr. Kathryn
Hill. Concerns the changing role of women in medicine over the years and
women's effort to combat discrimination in the medical field. Conducted
November 18, 1982.
