The Papers of the ODU Women's CenterHistorical SketchThe Women’s Center opened in 1976 and is responsible for providing information and support to older and/or returning women students through courses, programs, conferences and support groups. It also provides information on issues important to students, including sexual assault on campus. In 1995, the Women in Leadership and Development (W.I.L.D.) program was started, which supports women aspiring to attain leadership roles by enhancing leadership skills, and creating a social network for like-minded women. Scope and ContentsThe papers of the Women’s Center date from 1978 through 2004. The collection contains newsletters, event fliers, memos, a listing of courses offered each semester, course fliers, photographs, a newspaper clipping and a reference letter pertaining to Julie Dodd (also known as Julie White), director of the Women’s Center, as well as W.I.L.D. memos and brochures. Series DescriptionsSeries I. Administrative: This series relates to the administrative aspect of the Women’s Center. It includes correspondence in regards to Julie Dodd’s candidacy for Coordinator of the National Women’s Studies Association as well as an itinerary for a Women’s Day Forum where she spoke. It includes pamphlets that provide general information on the Women’s Center. It includes various newsletters published by the Women’s Center.
Series II. Courses, Programs, Seminars and Workshops: This series includes brochures that provide information on courses being offered during the semester, 1978 through 1987, and include the date and time of each. It also includes fliers and pamphlets on the courses, as well as programs, seminars and workshops, late 1970s through 1980. W.I.L.D. memos and brochures are also included, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004. Series III. Events: This series includes memos and letters on conferences and receptions, late 1970s through mid-1980s, brochures on lectures and discussions, 1979, and a flier and invitation of the tenth anniversary of the Women’s Center, 1986. It also includes an undated flier for a personal support group, a brochure for co-sponsored event at Obici Hospital, 1990, and a report on the Hidden from History conference, 1978. Series IV. Photographs: This series includes three photographs of women involved in Women’s Center activities. ProvenanceThe Women’s Center donated this material in 2009.
