Dorothy Evelyn Stanley, 90, of Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia
Beach died Aug. 14, 2000, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.
A retired professor of modern languages at Old Dominion University
where she taught for 15 years, Dr. Stanley was the author of two
books - "They Call it Courage" and "How to Live Creatively." During
her retirement years she was a guest speaker at numerous area
organizations and clubs.
Born in Nuremburg, Germany, she fled from the Nazis in 1937,
settled in New York, became an American citizen in 1943, and received
a Master of Arts degree from Hunter College in New York.
She is survived by a son, Frank Strauss of New York City; five
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Brigitte
Brachman, formerly of Boca Raton, predeceased her.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at
Bayside Presbyterian Church. Donations in her memory may be made to
the Vision III Church Building Fund of Bayside Presbyterian Church or
to the Westminster-Canterbury Fellowship Fund.
