Mrs. Dorothy Pierce Ladd, 89, widow of Ralph Elbridge Ladd, died in a local hospital on Monday, October 9, 2006. Dorothy was born on January 16, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Evelyn Lewis Pierce and Clarence James Pierce. She grew up in Norfolk, and graduated from Maury High School. She was a graduate of the College of William and Mary (1937), where she was a member of the Old Guard; and the Columbia University School of Library Science. Dorothy served as the head librarian of the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. For many years, she was the assistant head librarian at Boston University. In 1984, Dorothy and her husband retired to her home in Sharps. Dorothy was a member of a number of professional organizations. She attended Milden Presbyterian Church (USA) in Sharps, where she served as an elder, adult Sunday school teacher, and moderator of the Women's Bible Study Group. Dorothy is survived by a number of cousins. A memorial service honoring Dorothy's life will be held on Wednesday, October 11, 2006, at noon followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Milden Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 31, Sharps, Va. 22548, or a charity of choice.
