Select a Topic

If you need ideas for a research paper topic, your library might have a copy of a book such as What Can I Write About? or An Index of Ideas for Writers and Speakers. Or, you might want to browse the subjects listed in a periodical index such as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Criminal Justice Abstracts, or Applied Science & Technology Index for ideas. Or, use electronic indexes, such as General OneFile.

Cynthia Swaine's (ODU Library) Idea Generator is another good place to look for paper topics.

Be sure you refine your topic to one that is concise and manageable. When in doubt, ask your instructor or a reference librarian for advice.

Check your library first; then check hours and services of Consortium libraries before you visit one.
